Poa Annua Control

Printer friendly version:  click here

POA Annua is also annual bluegrass. This is the grass we commonly see in May and June with all those unsightly seed heads. This is a native grass and our soils are usually full of these seeds. Every lawn will have this problem sooner or later. This grass species is weak and heat and disease prone. The lower you cut your lawn and the more often you water your lawn the more of this weed grass you will have. For POA Annua control two applications of herbicide can be applied in the fall and sometimes also one in the spring. The POA Annua will die off slowly. Sometimes with fall treatments you will not notice the dead patches until the spring. These areas will get seeded with desirable grass species. Usually this is done for three to four years. At that point you may see areas of POA Annua which have persisted and not died off. This is the hardier strain of this plant sometimes referred to as the perennial form usual materials do not work on this plant. A total kill product such as round-up would have to be used. What you will see is less of the seed heads each year. A 70% reduction of POA Annua can be expected. This makes your lawn more attractive, less seed heads, more disease resistance and heat tolerance.
